Indiana prohibits the entry of firewood from states with a known occurrence of thousand canker disease (TCD). TCD is a disease caused by the walnut twig beetle which, like many other forest pests, can spread to new areas on firewood.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), visitors to public lands in Indiana are permitted to bring firewood if:
- It is kiln-dried scrap wood with no bark
- It is Indiana-grown firewood and has all bark removed
- It is labeled with a USDA or Indiana compliance stamp
- It is purchased from the property camp store or on-site firewood vendor
Parks and campgrounds often have their own firewood policies (e.g., Indiana Dunes National Park, Hoosier National Forest). Be sure to determine the firewood rules at your destination before bringing firewood; when in doubt, buy firewood where you burn it!
